After a while, we seem to underrate how valuable our reading glasses or even glass trays are until they fall down, hitting the hard floor and shattering into a hundred bits as a result. Interestingly, a crew of engineers working at University of Pittsburgh have chosen to change this pattern by transforming pure monoatomic metals to glass.
The process involves the conversion of liquefied elements like vanadium and tantalum into glass by the application of a recent cooling system. Electronic devices such as video game consoles, mobile phones, computer devices have been widely manufactured using tantalum.
Metallic glasses will have great advantages over our usual glasses due to their strength and the fact that they will be relatively easy to produce fast. Prof. Scott Mao of University of Pittsburgh summed it best when he said “People believed that it could be done and now we are able to show that it is possible.”
